Transparency and Commitment
We understand that Swedish Fencing, as all other federations, is not neutral. We all have our interests, dreams and steadfast opinions. What we need to do is to openly acknowledge that and discuss where we can meet. The larger federations are important to our sport but also the smaller federations need to know that in fencing everyone is treated equal and that the interests of all the athletes are always protected.
We wish to be transparent so we provide you with the following information: The Swedish Fencing Federation receives grants from the Swedish Confederation of Sports to help us have a small office and organize fencing clubs in Sweden. We also receive a small grant from the Swedish Olympic Committee to develop our ladies team in épée. Finally: We have also for 2024 received a grant (SEK 30.000 which is the equivalent of approximately EUR 2.900) to support our international candidates.
Otherwise, we rely on volunteers and income from licenses and membership fees. Our self-assessment is that we could be considered independent and with no conflicts of interest when we act on international level since our mandate comes exclusively from our members, the clubs.
We also pledge not to put pressure on our candidates to take any note of the wishes of the Swedish Federation, should they become elected by the FIE Congress. What we expect – and what we know we will get from them – is that they are always honest, follow the rules, take responsibility and treat every person with respect. They will make us proud by working for the development of international fencing, not for personal or national interests.
What’s in it for us?
The strategic interests of the Swedish Fencing Federation on international level is that the international federation provides the following:
- An environment that encourages all federations to be knowledgeable, responsible and engage and have their say in decisions that are important for future development
- Balances the interests of all geographical areas, federations of different sizes
- Secures a sound and long-term financial stability to ensure a stable international co-operation in the interest of fencers everywhere
- Is reputated for its adherence to the principles of good governance in the sporting world.
- In competitions and championships the athletes should always be able to count on fair play and abidance by the rules and. Under no circumstances should there be doubt about the integrity of officials or referees.
